Girmitiya Conference 2021

  • Mode –   Virtual
  • Theme –   Changing identities, shifting trends and roles
  • Dates –   16 and 17 September, 2021

India Foundation is organising ‘Girmitiya Conference 2021’ between 16-17 September 2021, virtually, with the support of the Overseas Indian Affairs Division of the MEA. Unlike other conferences that focus on recent migrants, this conference turns the focus to India’s indentured labourers and their descendants. This section of the diaspora has endured tremendous hardship and suffering, yet have emerged as a significant force in their respective countries.

India Foundation believes that it is important to highlight these aspects. A striking feature that the Conference hopes to throw light on is that despite the vast geographical dispersion, the evolution of girmitiya societies have generally followed a similar pattern. Important, this diaspora strives to remain connected with India and makes efforts to retrace their roots. The ‘Girmitiya Conference 2021’ can help in strengthening these socio-political and religio-cultural linkages between India and the girmitiyas.

Registrations for the Conference are now open! All those interested in attending the conference may fill out this form –
